| A record 83,331 zoo-goers spent the day at the Bronx Zoo during its Earth Week–Party for the Planet celebration on Wednesday, April 23. Rivers of ice cream flowed from the concession stands, hundreds of pictures were snapped of big cats and butterflies, and thousands of visitors experienced wildlife up-close and a park full of vibrant spring blooms.
The attendance figure was the highest number of visitors in one day in 67 years, since the African Plains opened on May 4, 1941. Attendance that day swelled to 84,727. Annually, the Bronx Zoo welcomes nearly two million visitors.
“We were thrilled to see so many visitors wanting to spend Earth Week at the Zoo,” said director Jim Breheny. “All of us at the Wildlife Conservation Society were enthusiastic to experience such a beautiful spring day with so many thousands of visitors.”
