We hope you’ll celebrate the Bronx Zoo’s 125th birthday with us this spring and summer.

Unique Primates

Geladas are sometimes known as “bleeding heart baboons” for the characteristic patch of red skin on their chests. The males have a flowing cape of long hair on their backs which resembles a shawl.

Family Bonds

It’s fascinating to observe the geladas interacting with one another within their family units. They are the only non-human primate known to communicate in speech-like rhythms while simultaneously using complex facial movements.

In the Exhibit

Nubian Ibex

A species of long-horned mountain goat that is adapted to steep mountain habitats.

Rock Hyrax

A small terrestrial mammal that lives among boulders, rock crevices, and cliffs. Hyraxes are among the closest living relatives to elephants.

Gelada

A grass-grazing monkey endemic to the Ethiopian Highlands. They are the only surviving primates other than humans who are entirely ground-based.
