Sea Lion Pool

Quiet in the pinniped gallery! The Sea Lion Pool is home to some of our most boisterous animal residents (sea lions are a type of pinniped). It has been a fixture at the Zoo since our earliest days. As an anchor for the Astor Court campus, it also serves as a familiar meeting place for visitors. This replication of the rocky beaches, islands, and tidal pools of the California coastline is a great place to watch our flippered crew sun-bathing, dive-bombing into deep waters, chasing pool toys or frozen “fishsicles,” and barking frequent announcements.
Stop by the pool at 10:30 a.m. (except Wednesdays) or 3:00 p.m. to catch a sea lion feeding, when zookeepers toss fish to our aquatic acrobats. Lunchtime is lively. Our sea lions eat between 12 and 35 pounds of fish per day! In the wintertime, when they need to bulk up on insulating blubber to stay warm, our group consumes approximately 93 pounds daily. At these sessions, you’ll also have the chance to ask keepers questions about sea lion care.
Royal Caribbean International is a proud sponsor of the Bronx Zoo's sea lion program.
