World of Darkness

Hey, who turned off the lights?

We did! That’s because nighttime is the best time for the Bronx Zoo’s nocturnal animals that reside in the caves and burrows of the World of Darkness. Wait a moment for your eyes to adjust, then creep through the darkened galleries to see sand cats, a sand boa, a two-toed sloth, broad-nosed caimans, and the world’s only nocturnal monkey, the douroucouli. Some of these animals have extraordinary night vision. Others use their keen senses of smell, touch, and hearing to get around, find food, and avoid predators.

As you experience life on the dark side, look out for our glowing scorpion; tune into our Mole Cam, reality TV starring a colony of naked mole rats clambering through a network of tunnels; and count up the many different types of bats that swoop through the various habitats. You’ll notice there’s not a lot of snoring going on in here, because when the sun goes down, most of the world’s wildlife wakes up!

Please note: Children age 16 and under must be accompanied inside the World of Darkness by an adult. One adult chaperone is required for every three children.
