Hightail it to the Ethiopian highlands! On the grassy slope of our Baboon Reserve, two troops of gelada baboons graze and romp alongside Nubian ibexes (wild goats), hyraxes, and African waterfowl. This stunning slice of “African Alps” is among the largest primate exhibits in the U.S.
Our gelada baboons, the most common of Ethiopia’s large native mammals, are led by a ruling sisterhood. Both males and females are marked with heart-shape patches on their chests that signal their readiness to mate. The lively interactions between troop members are the closest you’ll come to watching monkey-theater! Sharing the Reserve, a colony of rabbit-size rock hyraxes spend their days scaling rock faces and chasing one another inside the cave-like channels of the cliff they call home.
There’s lots more to see as you follow the path of an eroded riverbed through the exhibit. Check out the fossil dig station, take a lunch break at Somba Village, and peruse Bronx Zoo wares in the mud-and-thatch huts of the African Market.
Visitor’s Tip
To get a bird’s-eye-view the Baboon Reserve, take a trip overhead on Skyfari!
