Congo Gorilla Forest
Western Lowland Gorilla ©WCS/J.Maher | Chirp, chirp. Boom-a-boom-a-boom. Tweet, tweet, tweet! Welcome to the rainforest! Nearly 400 of Africa’s singers and swingers, representing 55 wildlife species, make their home in our 6.5-acre Congo Gorilla Forest. New York City will fade away as you trek beneath the thick canopy of leaves, through sprays of mist, past sunny meadows and thickets of bamboos, and up to treetop lookouts.
More than 20 western lowland gorillas, in two groups, make their home in this lush green landscape. Inside our Great Gorilla Forest, get up close to rambunctious youngsters, mothers toting babies on their backs, and hefty male leaders known as “silverbacks.” During wintertime, you can see the gorillas indoors.
Other creatures that live along the trail include black and white colobus monkeys, mandrills and DeBrazza’s monkeys, a family of red river hogs, gray-cheeked hornbills, the elusive okapi, and a host of critters that slither, hop, and crawl along the forest floor.
Inside our conservation galleries, catch a showing of Saving Africa’s Forests, contribute your admission fee* to protecting the Congolese wildlife species of your choice, and learn what it takes to be a conservationist in the green heart of Africa.
*Note: Free in wintertime. From April to October, a Pay-One-Price ticket will admit you to Congo and many other attractions at one low cost!
