We hope you’ll celebrate the Bronx Zoo’s 125th birthday with us this spring and summer.

Quiet and Dark

Subdued lighting allows us to observe nocturnal animals at their most active. The quieter you are during your visit, the more you’ll see shy animals including giant elephant shrews and kusu rats.

Chincilla

Native to the Andes mountains in South America, chincillas live in colonies called "herds" at high elevations. They forage at dawn and dusk, and stand on their hind legs to eat, holding their food in their paws.

In the Exhibit

Damaraland Mole Rat

These mole rats live in a colony led by a queen, who is the only breeding female. “Worker” Damaraland mole rats dig tunnels, care for the pups, and forage for food.

Spiny Mouse

Spiny mice are small mammals with bare, scaled tails. Their coats include unusually stiff guard hairs, similar to the spines of a hedgehog.

Northern Luzon Giant Cloud Rat

Native to Luzon Island in the Philippines, these rats spend most of their time in the treetops. Their tails and long claws help them to move among the branches.
