Aquatic Bird House & Sea Bird Aviary

Description

The Aquatic Bird House helps visitors to understand the importance of saving the world’s dwindling wetlands. The Sea Bird Aviary, with its cliffs filled with perching Inca terns and pools where Magellanic penguins gracefully swim, is one of the true gems of the park.

Fishing Experts

Spoonbills are supreme fishers, swinging their beaks back and forth through the water when they feed, keeping them slightly open. They have the ability to sense the slightest vibration, and can quickly close their bills to capture a meal.

Penguins and Terns

Visitors to the Sea Bird Aviary can see more than 40 Inca terns soaring over the Aviary’s cliffs and pools, which resemble the bird’s native habitat. The terns share the exhibit with Magellanic penguins, a species native to southern Chile, Argentina, and the Falkland Islands/Islas Malvinas. Magellanic penguins live in large groups but mated couples remain monogamous for years.

Flamingo Flock

Our Caribbean flamingos often stick together, even marching as a group through the water. This behavior serves them well in the wild, where Flamingos live in some pretty inhospitable places. There’s safety in numbers.

In the Exhibit

Laughing Kookaburra

The laughing kookaburra, the largest known kingfisher, is a native to eastern Australia. As its name indicates, the kookaburra has a distinctive call resembling a loud laugh. During courtship, female laughing kookaburras sing to potential male mates, who then bring food to the females.

Masked Lapwing

Native to Australia, New Zealand, and New Guinea, the masked lapwing spends most of its time on the ground searching for insects and worms, and has several distinctive calls. It is known for its defensive swooping behaviour during nesting season.

Little Blue Penguin

Named for their small size and characteristic bluish hue, little penguins are also known as blue penguins, little penguins, and fairy penguins. Adults are only about 13 inches tall and weigh 2 to 3 pounds.
