Fishing Experts
Spoonbills are supreme fishers, swinging their beaks back and forth through the water when they feed, keeping them slightly open. They have the ability to sense the slightest vibration, and can quickly close their bills to capture a meal.
Penguins and Terns
Visitors to the Sea Bird Aviary can see more than 40 Inca terns soaring over the Aviary’s cliffs and pools, which resemble the bird’s native habitat. The terns share the exhibit with Magellanic penguins, a species native to southern Chile, Argentina, and the Falkland Islands/Islas Malvinas. Magellanic penguins live in large groups but mated couples remain monogamous for years.
Flamingo Flock
Our Caribbean flamingos often stick together, even marching as a group through the water. This behavior serves them well in the wild, where Flamingos live in some pretty inhospitable places. There’s safety in numbers.
In the Exhibit
Madagascar Crested Ibis
Among the largest birds found on this island off the east coast of Africa, this species is endangered due to habitat loss. A breeding program at the Bronx Zoo is helping to preserve them.
Anhinga
Anhingas are water birds native to the Americans. Their long, slender beaks are perfectly adapted to find food in freshwater lakes, ponds, and slow-moving streams.
Little Blue Penguin
Named for their small size and characteristic bluish hue, little penguins are also known as blue penguins, little penguins, and fairy penguins. Adults are only about 13 inches tall and weigh 2 to 3 pounds.
