In the Exhibit
Luna Moth
Also known as the American moon moth, the luna moth is part of a group commonly known as giant silk moths. It’s one of the larger moths in North America. The elongated tails of this moth’s hindwings may confuse the echolocation detection used by predatory bats.
Malachite
This species is named for the mineral malachite, which is similar in color to the bright green on the butterfly's wings. The malachite is common throughout Central and northern South America, and can be found as far north as southern Texas and the tip of Florida.
Zebra Longwing
Zebra longwing adults roost communally at night in large groups for safety from predators. The adult butterflies are unusual in feeding on pollen as well as on nectar; the pollen enables them to synthesize cyanogenic glycosides that make their bodies toxic to potential predators.
