We hope you’ll celebrate the Bronx Zoo’s 125th birthday with us this summer.
Giant Reptiles
In warm weather, you’ll encounter two of the Bronx Zoo’s biggest reptile species outside Zoo Center: Komodo dragons and giant Aldabra tortoises. Besides their impressive size, Aldabra tortoises are thought to live 200 years or more. And Komodo dragons are the world’s largest living species of lizard.
White Rhinos
The Bronx Zoo exhibits two rhino species; the southern white rhinos can be seen at Zoo Center, and the greater one-horned rhinoceros can be seen from the Wild Asia Monorail. Illegal poaching of rhinos for their horns is the greatest threat facing these animals. The white rhino is the only rhino species that is not listed as endangered, although the increased threat of poaching for the illegal sale of rhino horns threatens the future of these iconic animals.
In the Exhibit
Komodo Dragon
Fully grown, adult males can reach nine feet from nose to tail, and tip the scales at 360 pounds.
Southern White Rhino
The rhino’s horn is composed entirely of keratin – the same substance that makes up hair and nails.
Giant Aldabra Tortoise
Aldabra tortoises are one of only two remaining species of giant tortoises; the other is the Galapagos tortoise.
