Building Representation in Conservation

The fields of Science, Technology, Engineer, and Mathematics (STEM)can sometimes feel inaccessible, but WCS believes caretakers, teachers, and informal educators are all instrumental to support the next generation of professionals who are going to build and shape our world. However, to shape the world we hope to see, we need to think critically about who is involved in the field. Does everyone have a voice, or a seat at the table? In order to foster the next generation of STEM and conservation professionals it is essential that we find innovative ways to bring more diversity into these fields. WCS education has been working hard to create a place for all young people to explore their interests, and for educators to learn tactics for inclusion.

This full day digital event showcased how WCS Education has incorporated diversity, equity, and inclusion into our programming. The day included career talks, targeted breakout sessions for teachers, caretakers, and informal educators, as well as a panel discussion. It was a robust day in which participants were able to better understand the ways that they can foster growth in youth, in both STEM identity and career options. Participants heard from staff working in a variety of disciplines and gained a deeper understanding of conservation as it currently is and how we hope it will continue to grow.

This event was free, funded by If/Then, an initiative of Lyda Hill Philanthropies.
