Global 2 Local: NY Metropolitan Area Teachers

This free, grant-funded workshop series connects conservation to the classroom through interactive storytelling, science practices, and interdisciplinary connections bridging global field work to local contexts.
Note: These in-person workshops are especially geared towards NYC teachers' curricula, but any teachers who can join us at our parks are more than welcome to attend!

From Mammoths to Mountain Lions: Exploring Genetics, Conservation & Human Impact

Explore the powerful connection between genetics, ecology, and conservation in this middle and high school teacher PD anchored in the New Visions Biology curriculum. Investigate human impact on ecosystems through the lens of the Woolly Mammoth in Unit 6 and a real-world case of mountain lion conservation in Unit 4: Saving The Mountain Lion. Analyze genetic diversity, interpret authentic data, and discover how zoos support species survival. Turn unit themes into adventure: Plan engaging zoo visits while weaving Field Sight data and videos into the New Visions curriculum.

Christine Boyer (she/her)

Retiring from the classroom only meant leaving her day job. Christine Boyer has cultivated a deep love for education and a passion for science so working for WCS is a natural next step. As an Adjunct Conservation Educator, Christine’s goal is to bring her years of classroom experience to a new level working with dynamic educators to bring the message of conservation, and the importance of our connections to the natural world to as many students as possible.
