Can my children or family attend?
Unfortunately, no. This overnight is designed for educators/teachers specifically and you will be learning and earning CTLE hours, so this is not an opportunity for partners, friends, children, or other non-teachers to join you. However, if you want to come again for a family or group overnight, check out the great offerings from the aquarium, Sharks After Dark!
Do you provide sleeping bags?
Participants are required to bring their own sleeping bags/bedding.
What about the weather?
The overnight will take place rain, snow, or shine. Some activities will take place outdoors, so be prepared with appropriate outdoor attire. Sleeping accommodations are indoors though, so no worries there. In the event of severe weather, the overnight may be canceled and a full refund will be issued.
What if I cannot arrive on time?
In order to pack as much fun as possible into one night, we must start on time! Check-in starts at 5:00pm and ends promptly at 6:00pm. If you are not able to arrive in that time slot, please contact us at least 2 weeks prior to the overnight to let us know. If an emergency situation comes up and you will be arriving late, email is the best form of communication (teacherinfo@wcs.org).
What if I need to leave early?
Please contact us no later than 2 weeks prior to the overnight if you need to leave early so that we can coordinate with our Security team since all parking lots will be closed.
Can I get a refund if I cannot attend the overnight?
Individuals who wish to cancel their registration must notify the Education Department in writing. You may receive a 50% refund if you notify the Education Department 2 weeks or more before the event start date. However, any cancellations within 2 weeks or less of the course start date will receive no (0%) refund.
Where will we be sleeping?
All program participants will be sleeping in specific areas of the Ocean Wonders: Sharks! exhibit.
How far do we have to carry our gear?
You'll need to carry your gear from the parking lot to the Ocean Wonders: Sharks! exhibit inside the aquarium. Please make sure to label ALL gear with your first and last name so items aren't mistaken by someone else. Make sure to keep it light. We suggest no more than one backpack and sleeping bag per guest.
What should we wear?
Comfortable clothes are a must. The program will run rain or shine, so make sure to bring a raincoat if rain is in the forecast. We also suggest warmer gear if needed for sleeping, as it gets cooler at night. Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended, since you will be doing a lot of walking as well.
During the Program
Are there showers? Will we have overnight access to a bathroom?
All bathrooms are a quick walk from the sleep site and located inside the exhibit. There are toilets and sinks, but no showers available. The bathrooms will be open throughout the night.
Are there any outlets at the sleeping location?
There are very few outlets available. We will provide some power strips, but be prepared for limited access. If you plan on bringing an air mattress, make sure to bring a battery-operated pump to inflate the mattress. For your cell phones and other electronics, think about bringing an external charger. If you have a CPAP or other such device and require power overnight, please let us know in advance so we can work with you to accommodate your needs.
Do we need to bring any food?
No. A catered buffet dinner will be provided for you as well as a continental breakfast in the morning. If you are a big late-night snacker, feel free to bring yourself additional snacks for after dinner.
I have a food allergy/dietary restriction. Should I let you know ahead of time?
Yes, please. We make every effort to ensure that our dinner and breakfast do not contain nuts or nut products as well as to provide vegetarian options. However, if you have any severe allergies, we suggest that you let us know and even consider bringing your own food in a sealed container. Please let us know at least 2 weeks before the overnight if you have any other dietary needs, and we'll do our best to accommodate the requests.
Can I bring my own alcohol?
No, we must comply with liquor laws and cannot have outside alcohol at the event. However every participant will receive 2 free drink tickets to use at our bar.
