Historical Bronx Zoo

February 10, 2016

Curious what the Bronx Zoo has looked like through the years? Thanks to a grant from the New York State Program for the Conservation and Preservation of Library Research Materials, we'll be able to better protect our historic photographic negatives dating back to the founding of the zoo in 1899. There are some pretty stunning shots.

From Left to Right: Axis deer herd, 1907; Barbary lion cubs, 1903; Sultan, a Barbary lion, 1903; Herd of bison and young, 1907; Black-footed ferret, 1905; Cyclone the grizzly bear, 1901; Kodiak bear and keeper, 1905; Peary's eskimo dogs, 1902; Tasmanian tiger, 1903; Three-toed sloth, 1907; Feeding the sea lions, 1905.
