The Evolution of a Zoo

Virtual Live Program

Celebrate the Bronx Zoo’s 125th anniversary with us! In this two-part course, participants will travel back in time to the exclusive royal menageries of ancient civilizations, to the first exotic animal collections open to the public, and to the founding of the Bronx Zoo to examine how the philosophy and purpose of keeping animals in captivity changes through the ages, including the role colonization plays in shaping those philosophies.

In this program, we will explore the WCS Archives to see examples of how the Bronx Zoo has been a leader in the evolution of the modern zoo, as well as share the lessons we have learned from missteps taken along the way. We hope participants will leave this course with a better understanding of the purpose and importance of the modern zoo as well as their role in advocating for a better future for all.

Missed a class? It's not too late to join! Participants gain access to recordings of each class with purchase.

This is a live, virtual course hosted in partnership with Roundtable by the 92nd Street Y, New York. It includes interactive opportunities available for all course participants.
